The Nellcor Portable SpO2 Patient Monitoring System from Medtronic is a compact, battery-powered monitor for spot-check and continuous pulse oximetry during patient transport, on rounds and in areas without fixed monitoring. It measures SpO2 and pulse rate using the Nellcor sensor range.
At a glance
- Compact and battery powered for transport and mobile use
- Spot-check and continuous SpO2 and pulse-rate measurement
- Nellcor pulse oximetry technology for motion and low-perfusion conditions
- Compatible with the full Nellcor sensor range
- On-screen trends and adjustable alarms
The Nellcor Portable SpO2 Patient Monitoring System is a handheld-format pulse oximeter from Medtronic, intended for use where a fixed bedside monitor is not practical — patient transport, ward rounds, emergency triage, recovery and outpatient areas.
What does it do?
It measures functional oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate, for both quick spot checks and continuous monitoring, and provides on-screen trends and adjustable alarms. Battery power makes it easy to move with the patient.
Nellcor technology and sensors
The device uses Nellcor pulse-oximetry technology, designed to help sustain measurements during motion and low perfusion, and is compatible with the wider Nellcor sensor portfolio across adult, paediatric, infant and neonatal patients. A site already using Nellcor sensors at the bedside can use the same sensors on transport.
Where it is used
- Intra- and inter-hospital patient transport
- Ward rounds and rapid-response assessment
- Emergency triage, recovery and outpatient clinics
Clinical context
As with all pulse oximetry, the device reports oxygen saturation and pulse rate only — not ventilation or carbon dioxide — and readings should be interpreted alongside the clinical assessment. Correct sensor choice and placement are essential for reliable values.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Nellcor portable monitor for spot checks or continuous monitoring?
Both. It supports quick spot-check readings and continuous monitoring with trends and alarms, and is battery powered for use on the move.
Can it use the same sensors as our bedside Nellcor monitors?
Yes. It is compatible with the Nellcor sensor range, so a site can standardise on one sensor family for bedside and transport use.
What does SpO2 tell the clinician?
It estimates the percentage of haemoglobin saturated with oxygen, together with pulse rate. It does not assess ventilation or carbon dioxide levels.
