The Nellcor Bedside SpO2 Patient Monitoring System is a dedicated pulse-oximetry monitor from Medtronic. It is designed for continuous monitoring of oxygenation on general wards, step-down units and other areas where a full multiparameter monitor is not required.
What does it monitor?
It continuously measures functional oxygen saturation (SpO2) and pulse rate, displays current values and trends, and provides adjustable visual and audible alarms so that clinical staff are alerted to changes in a patient's oxygenation.
Nellcor pulse oximetry
The system uses Nellcor pulse-oximetry technology, which is designed to help maintain reliable measurements during conditions that challenge oximetry — such as patient motion and low peripheral perfusion. It works with the established Nellcor sensor portfolio, so a site can standardise on one sensor family across patient sizes.

- General and surgical wards for routine and post-operative oxygenation monitoring
- Step-down and respiratory units
- Any setting where continuous SpO2 monitoring with alarms is indicated but full haemodynamic monitoring is not
Clinical context
Pulse oximetry indicates oxygen saturation and pulse rate; it does not measure ventilation or carbon dioxide. For patients at risk of respiratory depression — for example during opioid therapy or procedural sedation — capnography may be indicated alongside oximetry. Interpret readings in the context of the whole clinical picture.

What is the difference between a Nellcor bedside and portable SpO2 monitor?
The bedside system is intended for continuous monitoring at a fixed bedside with alarms and connectivity; the portable system is a smaller unit for transport and spot-check use. Both use the Nellcor sensor range.
Does the monitor work during patient movement?
Nellcor pulse-oximetry technology is designed to help maintain measurements during challenging conditions such as motion and low perfusion. Signal quality still depends on correct sensor selection and placement.
Which sensors does it use?
The Nellcor sensor range, covering adult, paediatric, infant and neonatal patients in adhesive and reusable formats. Choose the sensor for the patient's size and the intended monitoring duration.
Does SpO2 monitoring detect a rising CO2 level?
No. Pulse oximetry measures oxygen saturation and pulse rate, not ventilation or carbon dioxide. Where CO2 monitoring is needed, capnography is used in addition.
