The BIS Quatro Sensor from Medtronic is a single-patient-use, self-adhesive sensor with four electrodes that attaches to the patient's forehead to acquire the frontal EEG used for Bispectral Index (BIS) monitoring during anaesthesia and sedation.

At a glance

  • Single-patient-use, self-adhesive frontal EEG sensor
  • Four-electrode array ("Quatro") for BIS signal acquisition
  • Works with Medtronic BIS monitors and modules
  • Supports infection-prevention practice — no reprocessing

The BIS Quatro Sensor is a consumable component of the Medtronic Bispectral Index (BIS) monitoring system. It is the interface between the patient and the monitor: a single-patient-use, self-adhesive strip carrying four electrodes that is applied to the forehead and temple to acquire the frontal electroencephalogram (EEG).

What is the BIS Quatro Sensor used for?

The sensor captures the EEG signal that a BIS monitor processes into the Bispectral Index — a 0–100 value reflecting the hypnotic effect of anaesthetic agents. It is used wherever BIS monitoring is applied: operating theatres, intensive care and procedural sedation.

Why single-patient-use?

Because the sensor is disposable, there is no reprocessing between patients, which supports infection-prevention practice and gives a fresh, consistent electrode set for every case. Correct skin preparation and placement, as described in the instructions for use, help the monitor achieve a good Signal Quality Index.

Compatibility

The BIS Quatro Sensor is designed for use with Medtronic BIS monitors and OEM modules, including 2-channel and 4-channel configurations. Where a bilateral montage is required, the BIS Bilateral sensor is used instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BIS Quatro Sensor reusable?

No. It is single-patient-use and is discarded after the case. This avoids reprocessing and provides a consistent electrode set for each patient.

Where is the sensor placed?

On the forehead and temple, following the placement diagram in the instructions for use. Good skin preparation improves signal quality.

Which monitors is it compatible with?

Medtronic BIS monitors and OEM modules, in 2-channel and 4-channel configurations. For a bilateral montage, the BIS Bilateral sensor is used.

Why is it called "Quatro"?

The name refers to its four-electrode array, which the monitor uses to acquire and check the frontal EEG signal.
