Medtronic PillCam SB3 Capsule

PillCam is a capsule-endoscopy platform from Medtronic. It is used to obtain a visual record of the gastrointestinal (GI) mucosa — most commonly the small bowel, a region that is difficult to examine fully with conventional upper endoscopy or colonoscopy.

How does capsule endoscopy work?

The patient swallows a single-use capsule that contains one or more miniature cameras, a light source, a battery and a wireless transmitter. As natural motility carries the capsule along the digestive tract, it captures images that are transmitted to a recorder worn by the patient. Afterwards, the images are downloaded and reviewed by a clinician on dedicated reading software, and the capsule is passed naturally.

What is it used for?

• Investigation of the small bowel — for example in obscure or suspected small-bowel bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia work-up, and suspected or known small-bowel inflammatory disease
• Visualisation of GI segments where a non-invasive first-line look is preferred

Patient selection and safety

Capsule endoscopy has contraindications and precautions — including known or suspected GI obstruction, strictures or fistulae, swallowing disorders, and considerations for patients with implanted electromedical devices. Patient selection, preparation and any use of a patency capsule must follow the current instructions for use and local protocols. It is a visualisation tool; it does not allow biopsy or therapeutic intervention.
